Whether you have two, 20, or 200 pigs in Ontario, it is important to be aware of the management and welfare requirements of the swine industry. Also of the traceability requirements for movement of animals between farms and to slaughter.

Even if this is not your first time raising pigs, you may still have questions about their feeding, management, health, government regulations or mandatory requirements for raising pigs in Ontario.Ontario Pork has complied a how-to-guide to help small scale producers or hobby farmers raising pigs in Ontario.

This guide is intended for those raising weaned pigs through growing and finishing to slaughter weight, but does not contain information on the management of sows, breeding or farrowing.

This resource manual will provide basic information about raising pigs safely and humanely. During development, multiple resources were referenced. Use this manual as a guide to understand how to:

• Raise healthy pigs responsibly and respectfully in accordance with government legislation;
• Economically produce high quality, safe pork products; and
• Effectively respond in emergency situations.

This manual covers all the elements of poultry production with the goal of helping the small flock owner keep their birds as healthy as possible. It covers areas including housing and management, basics of poultry diseases, disease prevention and control, and food safety. 

People who raise "backyard flocks" - poultry or gamebirds for personal or limited commercial purposes - should be aware of the risk to their birds, and to commercial poultry, from diseases such as avian influenza virus. Preventive measures taken to minimize the introduction and spread of diseases and other hazards are referred to as "biosecurity." The following simple, inexpensive biosecurity recommendations can be very effective in preventing a serious disease outbreak.

The Canadian Small-Scale Pig Farming Manual is designed for people who are interested in raising pigs on a small-scale basis. The objective of the Manual is to provide users with information in key areas to help raise pigs successfully and responsibly. The Manual builds on the experience of small-scale pig farmers who have learned by doing.

Established by the President of the Royal Society of Canada in April 2020, the RSC Task Force on COVID-19 was mandated to provide evidence-informed perspectives on major societal challenges in response to and recovery from COVID-19. 

The Task Force established a series of Working Groups to rapidly develop Policy Briefings, with the objective of supporting policy makers with evidence to inform their decisions. 

Overview of “Strengthening a One Health Approach to Emerging Zoonoses”

Given the enormous global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, greatly exacerbated by the intra-pandemic emergence of novel variants of concern (VOCs), and multiple, ongoing outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Canada (Canadian Food Inspection Agency, 2022), there is a pressing need for a deeper understanding of the interface where humans and other animals interact in their shared environment, and the intersecting biological, ecological, and socioecological factors contributing to the emergence, spread, and impact of zoonotic diseases.

Report on the epidemiology of equine piroplasmosis in the United Sates for 2021. 

Summary: There were 35,493 domestic U.S. horses tested for EP from January to December 2021 and a total of 36 new T. equi-infected horses identified in 7 states. Thirty-one of these horses were Quarter Horse racehorses with iatrogenic transmission involved in the epidemiology of the infection and 5 horses  were suspected or confirmed to have been illegally moved from Mexico. Fifteen of the 36 EP-positive horses were found to be dual infected with equine infectious anemia.
