Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in British Columbia, November 21, 2021

Canadian Animal Health Surveillance System
Share:
Strangles has been confirmed on two horse farms in Langley, BC. An animal from one farm was shipped to the second farm prior to the onset of disease. The index case is suspected to be a feral miniature mule purchased from an auction in Northern BC. Between the two farms, at least 11 horses are suspected to have been infected. The organism was isolated via bacterial culture from submandibular abscess aspirates on both farms. Due to the feral nature of many of the animals on one of the farms, physical examination and diagnostic testing could not be performed on all suspected cases.
