West Nile Virus in Ontario, October 10, 2024

West Nile Virus has been confirmed in the District of Thunder Bay, Ontario. This gelding was noted to be "not quite right" by the owner a few days before he was examined by the veterinarian on September 23, 2024 who diagnosed a low grade fever, muscle fasciculations of the triceps muscle and sore front feet. Upon re-examination a few days later, he was noted to have twitching of the lower lip and ataxia. The horse has since recovered. West Nile Virus was confirmed on October 10, 2024. The horse was not vaccinated against West Nile Virus. One additional horse was exposed. This is the 9th equine case of West Nile Virus in Ontario this year.
