Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Ontario, May 5, 2025

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in Brant County, Ontario. A 7 year old Quarter Horse gelding developed a fever and nasal discharge shortly after returning from a competition held in the Hamilton, Ontario region. Testing of the nasal discharge from the gelding was positive for S. equi. One other horse on the property has developed fever and nasal discharge, and is a suspected case. Two additional horses were exposed. The facility owner, working with their veterinarian, has instituted voluntary animal movement restrictions and biosecurity protocols.
