Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Ontario, March 10, 2025

Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA)

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in Dufferin County, Ontario. An 18 year old Appaloosa mare became febrile and was promptly isolated. She developed multiple abscesses on the head and had repeated fevers. Culture and PCR were positive for S. equi. No other horses on the farm are affected. The facility owner is working with their veterinarian on voluntary animal movement restrictions and biosecurity.
