Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Ontario, June 6, 2024

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, Ontario. A yearling Standardbred filly developed parotid, submandibular and peri-rectal abscesses that were confirmed positive for S. equi on June 6, 2024. The filly arrived from another Ontario farm in November 2023. Two additional horses have been exposed. The farm owner is working with their veterinarian on voluntary movement restrictions and infection control measures.
