Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Ontario, July 10, 2025

Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA)

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario. A 6 year old Quarter Horse mare developed a unilateral swollen lymph node. An aspirate from the node and a nasopharyngeal swab were positive for S. equi. The facility owner, working with their veterinarian, has instituted voluntary animal movement restrictions and biosecurity protocols.
