Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Ontario, January 25, 2024

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in the City of Hamilton, Ontario. On January 23, 2024, a 10 year old Warmblood gelding presented with two draining abscesses on the head along with some abrasions. A sample of the draining fluid was positive for S. equi on PCR on January 25, 2024. This gelding arrived on the property about 14 days prior to the development of clinical signs. The farm owner, working with their veterinarian, has implemented voluntary animal movement restrictions and infection control procedures.
