Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Ontario, January 10, 2025

Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA)

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in Simcoe County, Ontario. A 17 year old Quarter Horse mare developed an abscess under her jaw which was positive on PCR for S. equi. Two other horses (one with an abscess under the jaw, and one with nasal discharge) have also been confirmed positive. A fourth horse is suspected positive. The facility owner is working with their veterinarian on voluntary animal movement restrictions and biosecurity.
