Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Ontario, February 2, 2024

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in the Regional Municipality of York. A 12 year old Quarter Horse developed a cough, unilateral nasal discharge, swollen lymph nodes, and a fever. The horse was tested on January 31, 2024, and a nasal swab was positive for S. equi by PCR on February 2, 2024. The horse was shipped from the US to Canada the week before symptoms developed. Under veterinary supervision, the facility owner has implemented voluntary animal movement restrictions and infection control procedures.
