Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Ontario, December 5, 2024

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in Perth County, Ontario. A 3 year old Standardbred filly developed lethargy, a low grade fever and a draining abscess under the jaw. A sample from the abscess was positive on culture and PCR for S. equi. The farm owner is working with their veterinarian on voluntary animal movement restrictions and biosecurity.
