Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in the District of Temiskaming, Ontario. A yearling Quarter Horse colt was was purchased from a farm in southern Ontario and paired with a gelding upon arrival. About 10 days later the yearling developed lymph node swelling, nasal discharge, and fever, and was positive on testing for S. equi. The facility owner, working with their veterinarian, has instituted voluntary animal movement restrictions and biosecurity protocols.
