Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in the Regional Municipality of Halton, Ontario. A 7 year old Quarter Horse mare was stalled next to a horse that arrived back from training at a facility that had a respiratory illness. She developed clinical signs of strangles and tested positive by PCR and culture. 5 additional horses were exposed. The farm owner has instituted voluntary animal movement restrictions and biosecurity protocols.
