Small hive beetle (SHB) has been detected in Quebec. At an apiary in the Arthabaska Regional County Municipality (RCM) in Centre-du-Québec, several hives were found to be infested with SHB adults and larvae. Measures were put in place at this site to address the infestation. Since the larvae were discovered in September, it is highly unlikely that the SHB development cycle will have had time to complete, as temperatures are not optimal for SHB development this late in the season.
An adult SHB specimen was also discovered during a mandatory active surveillance inspection in the border region with the United States, in the Jardins-de-Napierville RCM in Montérégie. Adult SHBs have frequently been discovered in this region at the end of the season.
Infestation by the SHB is reportable in Quebec. Any suspicion of its presence in a Quebec apiary must be reported to MAPAQ (1844ANIMAUX or abeille@mapaq.gouv.qc.ca).
