Equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in Quebec, May 21, 2024

Equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM) has been confirmed in Montérégie, Quebec. On May 18, 2024, a 21 year old Quarter Horse gelding presented with proprioceptive ataxia of the 4 limbs quite severe to the hind limbs with decreased tail tone and bladder atony, vestibular syndrome with tilted head and involvement of the facial nerve, and horizontal ocular nystagmus. Infection with equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) was confirmed on May 21, 2024. The horse is affected and alive. A second horse at the same stable presented with lethargy on May 20, 2024. Infection with EHV-1 was confirmed on May 23, 2024. The horse is recovering. The vaccination status of both horses is unknown. There are no additional cases in the stable.
