Equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM) has been confirmed in the City of Ottawa, Ontario. On November 9, 2024, three horses developed acute ataxia (ages 24, 30 and 17). They are all recovering. Two of the 3 tested positive for equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) by PCR. A fourth horse developed acute ataxia on November 12, 2024 and is also recovering. A fifth horse was placed in isolation on November 14, 2024. All horses are being isolated at the facility. The horses were vaccinated against EHV-1.
The barn manager has implemented voluntary animal movement restrictions and is working with their veterinarian on biosecurity measures.
