Equine herpes myeloencephalopathy has been confirmed in Red Deer County, Alberta. On November 8, 2025, an 11 year old gelding developed acute neurologic signs, ataxia, unable to pass manure, and unable to pass urine. The horse is recovering. The horse is vaccinated against equine herpesvirus.
UPDATE from November 28, 2025: Horse has recovered from EHV-1 infection. Three negative EHV-1 tests (PCR) obtained. Quarantine has been released (November 28, 2025). Boarding facility has had no additional cases and have completed 21 day quarantine period (November 29, 2025).
