Cases of the nervous form of equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) have been reported in stables in Montérégie and Laurentides (QC). Two horses that were not vaccinated developed the severe form of the disease and had to be euthanized. Note that no link has been identified between the current events in the stables. Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) is contagious and can manifest as respiratory or neurological illness, as well as abortions in mares. Horses can shed the virus and infect others without showing visible signs of the disease. Vaccination remains important in the strategy for the control of equine herpesvirus. Although no vaccine has been shown to be fully effective against the neurological form of EHV-1, it contributes to reducing the excretion of the virus as well as the severity and duration of symptoms. The vaccine also helps limit the repercussions associated with respiratory illness and abortions. The adoption of biosecurity measures by all stakeholders in the equine industry helps prevent further outbreaks. More information about the various biosecurity measures can be found in the Equine Biosecurity Guide produced by Cheval Québec, in collaboration with the Association of Equine Veterinarians of Quebec and the Association of Veterinary Practitioners of Quebec.
