Canine Influenza Virus A (H3N2) has been confirmed in a dog in Calgary, Alberta. It is suspected that the dog acquired the infection at a dog show in the USA at the end of September, 2023. The infected Canadian dog is deceased. The dog was a brachycephalic breed, which increased the risk of severe respiratory disease.
Canine influenza is not known to be circulating in Canada, and the Canadian dog population has very limited immunity.
As of October 25, 2023, there have not been additional cases of canine influenza reported, but dog owners in the Calgary area are encouraged to monitor their dogs for symptoms and limit contact with other dogs where possible.
